I enjoyed this book very much--it is well-documented historical fiction. Aimed at a young audience, eleven-year-old Liza's encounters with other real and fictionalized Worcester characters will no doubt also appeal to many adult readers, who will get a feel for the mid-nineteenth-century city through the eyes of an orphan child. An immigrant Irish girl, not sure where she belongs, begins to consider her options from the margins of a community that includes social reformers, abolitionists and woman's rights activists, such as Stephen and Abby Kelley Foster. Possibilities may be limited for Liza, but local families who contribute to the care of the orphans provide a range of examples and a window into the lives of other Worcester children on various paths to adulthood, including those preparing to become laundry workers, candy shopkeepers, and elite educated professionals. I just love the way this story weaves historical facts with an intelligent and wise imagination--including helpful footnotes that clearly point out the difference. Good idea to put a glossary in the back, too. Karen Board Moran has brought her sensitivity as a former middle school teacher to this fine work of storytelling. This is not my typical type of read. I lean more towards murder/mystery, science fiction, action type books but I received this one day during a book fair and exchanged a copy of my book for hers.
I was pleasantly surprised by the story itself, although the notes and captions scattered through out were a bit distracting. It was clearly stated that this was a work of historical fiction, so I felt the add-in's were over kill.
Following the story of Irish immigrant Liza and her family was very believable and will have the reader questioning what they would have done if place in a similar situation during that time. The way Moran wove in the story line of Woman's Rights (voting) was truly unique and made me want to stand up and cheer getting an 'inside peek' at how some woman fought to make this happen.
A carefully researched and well written historic fiction novel that will delight and educate the reader about indentured orphans and social issues in Massachuesets during the 1850s.
